The O’Neill DNA Agenda

The O’Neill DNA Agenda
 By M.A.O’Neill

I often ask why are O’Neill’s that have y-dna tested even joining the FTDNA O’Neill DNA project? Unless you just want to be a sucker and be placed in an “Ungrouped section”. I would advise the administrators of the FTDNA O’Neill DNA project to have a little more respect for those O’Neill’s tested and spend more time fixing the O’Neill DNA project than threading nonsense in forum. The problem is that many O’Neill’s in the United Sates and Ireland believes that he is a descendant of Hugh O’Neill or Shane “An Diomas” O’Neill or some other powerful O’Neill chief, and now by taking a y-dna some try to prove this. Instead they should be trying to find their own origins, and doing some unbiased research. It’s very easy just to take a y-dna test and your ancestors accomplished nothing then claim your descend from nobility.   There are countless O’Neill’s tested for their y-dna and all of various different Haplogroups, and somehow the so called “O’Neill Variety” is that of the O’Neill’s of Tyrone? Or many believe it to be, because of an out of date study that relied on the y-dna of O’Neill’s in Ireland? One none of the O’Neill chiefs have come forward with any y-dna sample, in my opinion, it’s cowardly in their part not to do so, since this will help find some clues of the true origins of the O’Neill’s, yet I can see why they wouldn’t when you have some O’Neill’s with the agenda of finding a so called descendant of a mythical High King named Niall of the Nine Hostages or wanting themselves to descend from some nobility.
I have to say this for those that don’t seem to understand that the O’Neill’s do not get their surname from a mythical king Niall of the Nine Hostages, but from Niall Glundubh MacAedo, and was very likely not of Celtic origins, but of a the same genealogy and y-dna of Ivar the Boneless. If many of these so called O’Neill experts took their head out their ass, and did some unbiased research they will find that there are records out there of these possible origins. You have to understand that these so called O’Neill history experts are not searching for the truth, but are there to prove their own theories and to push their agendas forward. Again, just look at the FTDNA O’Neill DNA Project and see how serious the y-dna sample of the O’Neill’s tested is regarded.
Also, let it say that the O’Neill Chiefs of the Clannaboy of Portugal and the O’Neill’s of the Fews in Spain obtained a y-dna test, and they made it public , but they did not match the majority of O’Neill’s tested, nor the SNP associated with a mythical High King. Then what they are no longer O’Neill’s? Or they no longer are accepted to be associated with the O’Neill clan? You see there are clowns out there that believe this and have that sort of mentality, yet who are they to make such decisions? One because they wish and have an agenda that the O’Neill Variety or the SNP associated with a mythical High King must be that of a true O’Neill’s chief. Utter stupidity! One these people gained their nobility titles in Spain and Portugal not in Ireland, regardless of what those in Ireland think it doesn’t matter nor will it matter what the y-dna SNP these men belong to.
It’s all politics and weakness in character that you have countless O’Neill’s promoting the O’Neill history, for some time now, yet the ability to obtain the y-dna from ancient bones has been around .Ask yourselves! Why is it that no one is pushing for the O’Neill’s ancient remains to be tested? What is the fear?
I also challenge any so called expert to find an origin or theory on the O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico’s current L48 SNP until further test are done, since the L48 SNP is one SNP that constantly brings new findings. The O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico unlike that other O’Neill’s currently tested stand on their own and are unique with no known relatives throughout the world currently tested. This makes us unique and the last of our kind! Our progenitor was a man named Don Constantino O’Neill living circa 1650’s in Galicia, Spain, and his mother was named “Rosio” very likely a nickname for the Rose or Rosa. The O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico y-dna stands alone and above all it looks to be the last of a long bloodline more than I can say for other O’Neill’s. Does it matter if we do match any O’Neill’s in Ireland? No it doesn’t! And it should never matter. Now if there is an O’Neill in Ireland and he matches us then that would be something unique. But the chances of this happening are slim to none.
Will the O’Neill Chiefs ever take a y-dna test? Maybe they already have but why should they make it public so they can be scrutinized by fools when their y-dna does not match theirs. There so many speculations why the O’Neill’s have not tested or have tested that I find amusing. That they already have tested and they did not like the results and will not make them public? If they did take a y-dna test why would they not make them public? One I believe it’s not because they did not like the results which it’s a stupid speculation, but their fear of giving legitimacy to another clan or group of O’Neill’s that can claim a higher standing than theirs. It’s the same politics and the same weakness that has been around the O’Neill clan for centuries. And now add y-dna O’Neill zealots with dreams of a mythical High king SNP and things get worse. Will the O’Neill chiefs make their y-dna results public if they have taken it? Never will they show it, in my opinion; they are too weak to handle the scrutiny or the speculations of the results.

Final Research into the O'Neill's of Puerto Rico

I started the research on the O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico, a few years ago then obtained a y-dna test with allot of skeptics and zealots dismissing my y-dna, since it was not that of the mythological Niall of the Nine Hostages the y –dna / SNP “Flavor of the month” at the time. Until I’ve found records with hardly any help of anyone at the start showing that the O’Neill’s of the Fews and others O’Neill’s lived on the island of Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean, a shock to the “So Called” American Irish and Irish O’Neill genealogy experts. In their mind the Caribbean was always the place were Cromwell sent Irish slaves, total ignorance, since the O’Neill’s “Counts of Tyrone” lived on Martinique in the Caribbean for over 200 years, and that O’Neill’s of the Fews lived in St. Croix. The Caribbean has always been neglected and this has to also with many looking at Europe and totally ignoring the Caribbean a region where the O’Neill’s and countless Irish mercenaries made their fortunes and fought for their new Catholic countries. Then you must add the racist ignorant people in to the equation that have in their mind what an O’Neill should look like. I find it all very amusing, and can careless for their views I’m of a Latin Culture and our ancestors have been for over 300 years.
I have to say the biggest shame is that to this date! And it’s not the mess of the O’Neill DNA Project, or the Chichesters O’Neill’s, but that I have yet to see any of the O’Neill Chiefs from Spain, France, and Portugal.Submit a y-dna sample, and frankly that’s cowardly, in my opinion. If they had nothing to hide they will come forward with a y-dna test and I’m talking about the Clannaboy and O’Neill’s of the Fews, also the hype of the O’Neill’s en France. If you’re an O’Neill who takes pride of your ancestry, and descendant from a long blood line then take your y-dna and show the world. I have come forward with my sample and to this date there are no matches with any other surname in any database, and this shows us the descendants of Don Juan O’Neill to be the last of our kind. I challenge anyone to find an origin for our Haplotype within the currently tested L48 SNP. Again, I came forward with a y-dna sample, since I have no fear or nothing to hide. It’s a sad shame that one of the greatest clans in Ireland and those that claim to be the descendants from the Royal Houses of O’Neill’s are too cowardly to take a simple y-dna test. When it comes to research into the O’Neill’s the Clannaboy and the Seville O’Neill’s of the Fews are just become insignificant and irrelevant. It’s time that y-dna samples are obtained from ancient O’Neill grave sites, and have everyone know that truth about the O’Neill origins.

Now, I can count on my hand the total of O’Neill’s in Puerto Rico that have helped me and that is a total of 5 people from Puerto Rico have given some help, and only two have come forward with y-dna samples that am very grateful for, since it has helped find out that not of the O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico are related, and also one y-dna sample combined with mine has helped us all define the y-dna of the descendants of Don Juan O’Neill in Puerto Rico. It has also helped us write our history and find our origins. I’ve opened the door for us O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico to have our story and origins known, and unlike others in Puerto Rico I do care to show later generations of O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico their origins and history based on y-dna ,genealogy, and unfolding the oral history . To those who care about our origins can always contact me and those who don’t care I can careless for them, if they are related or not. There are still a few mysteries left to be unsolved, and in due time with my hard work they will be solved. Then maybe finally the origins of two different O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico can be found.

Once I finally get new final SNP test for the L48, and find the true origins of Constantino O’Neill and Don Juan O’Neill, and a few facts on the oral histories. I will be done with all research on the O’Neill’s of Puerto Rico. The other countless O’Neill’s on the island I can’t say nothing for, since they have, yet to produce any facts about their origins. Once in a blue I get a message from a O’Neill of Puerto Rico and then they never respond somehow they believe they have the same relation, or are the same has all other O’Neill’s in Puerto Rico, but that is not the case there were many other O’Neill’s in Puerto Rico from various parts etc. Only a y-dna can prove this, but like I said once I find the true origins of Constantino O’Neill and Don Juan O’Neill I’m done with all research.

The O’Neill y Pastrana Family

The genealogy of Alfonso O’Neill y Manuel shows that both his parents were born on the Island of Tortola, but he was born in Puerto Rico. The island of Tortola is well known in history for being favored by pirates and raiders. And not far from the Island of St. Croix were once the O'Neill's of the Fews lived. In the 1640’s Spain began to lose their power, ownership of the Islands shifted back and forth between different countries nations. Tortola in the 17th century was successfully taken over by the English from the Dutch, and established a permanent plantation colony on Tortola and the surrounding islands. There are records of O'Neill's, or O'Neale's on the island of Tortola described to have been mariners, but they are from the middle of the 1800's, and may not be related to this O’Neill family. One of these men was named Jacob Marsden O'Neale a bachelor in his 30's (July 23, 1865), and alsoa Leopold O'Neale a bachelor in his 40's also described has a mariner (Feb 09, 1862) father was a Don Josephus O'Neale also a mariner by profession. Alfonso O’Neill y Manuel married Maria Pastrana they became the parents of Ricardo O’Neill y Pastrana b. 1886, Alfonso O’Neill y Pastrana b. 1888, Alfred O’Neill y Pastrana b. 1889, Emilia O’Neill y Pastrana b. 1894, Isabel O’Neill y Pastrana b. 1895, Eugenio O’Neill y Pastrana b. 1898, and Eduardo O’Neill y Pastrana b. 1903.

The O’Neill y Rosario Family:

Juan O’Neill Santos b. 1880 marries Geronima Rosario Camareno b. 1872, and they are both the parents of Gregorio O’Neill Rosario b. 1893, Jose O’Neill Rosario b.1894, Heriberto O’Neill Rosario b. 1895, Santiago O’Neill Rosario b. 1896, Ulises O’Neill Rosario b. 1897, Monseratte O’Neill Rosario (Male) 1903, Providencia O’Neill Rosario b. 1904, Victoriana O’Neill Rosario b. 1907, and Vicenta O’Neill Rosario b. 1903.

The Island of Vieques O’Neill’s:

All these O’Neill’s were born of the Island of Vieques, and not much is known about their origins their names are Eugenio O’Neill b.1863, Guillermo O’Neill b.1894, Juan Antero O’Neill b. 1903, Joaquin O’Neill b. 1905, Demetria O'Neill b. 1896, Josefa O’Neill b. 1897, Eduardo O’Neill b. 1899, Gregoria O’Neill b.1904, Magdalena O’Neill b.1876, Eugenio O’Neill y Reyes b. 1898,and Elena O’Neill y Reyes b. 1898-1902. I believe they either emigrated from neighboring islands like St. Croix and Saint Thomas, or had coming in the 1800’s has planters from the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. There are records of Don Enrique O’Neill y Chabert, the son of Don Arturo O’Neill y O’Keeffe, working on the Island of Vieques during the middle of the 1800’s are these descendants? And if they are they belong to the O’Neill’s of the Fews and the direct male descendants of Aodh of the Fews.

O'Neill de Millán family

Francisco O'Neill de Millán and Severa Arroyo parent of Calixto O’Neill. A. Calixto O'Neill married Genoveva Vasquez and they became the parents of Juan O'Neill, Irma O’Neill, Sophia O'Neill, Doris O'Neill, Ruben O’Neill, Emily O'Neill, Lucy O'Neill, and Frank O'Neill. It's not known if this O’Neill family is related to the O'Neill's descendants of Don Juan O'Neill. It's a possibility this could be the 3rd brother of Don Felipe O'Neill Casanas and Don Fransico O'Neill Casanas. Until a y-dna test is taken from one of the males of this family then it will be known. This family seems to be of origins in Aguadilla, Santurce, Ponce and Fajardo. It's very likely these maybe the descendants of one of the O'Neill's of the Fews sons, yet at the moment none come forward with any y-dna samples, or any concrete genealogy.

The O’Neill – Merced and O’Neill – Baez Connection

The progenitor of this family is at the moment Don Leon O'Neill y Rodriquez born circa 1878 approx. no birth certificates or other data on him is available other than census for 1910-1930, and a draft card from 1942. This family lived in Hato Nuevo, Rio, and Guaynabo.Current Y-DNA shows that one member of the O’Neill y Baez Family that has tested is of the Haplogroup J2. Leon O’Neill Rodriguez married ManuelaBaez Laguna and they became the parents of Juan Irene O’Neill Baez b. 1906, Ramona O’Neill Baez b. 1907, and Leonor O’Neill Baez b. 1909 The O'Neill Merced family is only related to the O'Neill Baez through their mother Francisca O'Neill Rodriguez, the sister of Leon O'Neill Rodriguez.Francisca O’Neill Rodriguez b. 1870 sister of Leon O’Neill Rodriguez b. 1878, and she looks to have had a first marriage, but the name of the father has not been found or given by any of the O’Neill’s in questioned, Fransica O’Neill was the mother of Maria b. 1899, Angelina b. 1901, Julia b. 1899, Francisco b. 1898, Juana b. 1895, Modesto b. 1892, Rufina b. 1902, and Esteban b. 1908. These O’Neill are the O’Neill’s y Merced family. They had a stepfather named Anizeto Merced b. 1870. It looks that the children of Francisca O’Neill Rodriguez kept the O’Neill surname from their mother and not their father who is unknown. But for these O’Neill’s to be O’Neill’s Francisca must have married another O’Neill since she was an O’Neill herself. The O’Neill-Baez are related to the O’Neill-Merced by way of Francisca O’Neill Rodriguez but the all the descendants of Francisca O’Neill Rodriguez are not O’Neill’s thru a male line but by their mother. So a Y-DNA sample from the descendants of • Esteban O’Neill Merced b. 1908 • Modesto O’Neill Merced b. 1892 • Francisco O’Neill Merced b.1898 The question will remain are these O’Neill’s related to any others on the island? Until they come forward with y-dna samples and a genealogy then we will know, but at the moment I suspect they are not related to the descendants of Don Juan O’Neill.

The O’Neill DNA

The O’Neill R1b’s Y-DNA
By M.A.O’Neill

The Irish genealogist did their work thoroughly, not only did they provide every Irish family of importance with a pedigree whish went back to Mil of Spain (or to Ith, mil's uncle), but they also invented a pedigree of Mil's ancestor's going back to Noah and thence to Adam. All this was accepted as indubitable truth by our native scholars.
- Early Irish History and Mythology - T.F. O'Rahilly

There are various SNP’s within the O’Neill’s in Ireland and outside Ireland, and it’s not known who is who and who is related to whom and how they ended up with that SNP, since the most of the time those who dealt with the O’Neill’s y-dna spent their time chasing the Niall of the Nine Hostages hype of the day. Then we must not forget that there are countless O’Neill clans throughout Ireland, and not all are of the Royal O’Neill’s. A high majority of O’Neill’s that live in Ulster that have not tested and those that have tested, but we don’t know if they are of the Royal O’Neill’s, and to make things complicated those O’Neill’s in Spain and Portugal representing the Clannaboy O’Neill’s, and O’Neill’s of the Fews, respectly the Asturias O’Neill’s of the Fews and Sevilla O’Neill of the Fews, to date have not come forward with a y-dna sample. You also have an O’Neill DNA project in shambles with its members mainly in ungrouped categories. There was much hoopla over the O’Neill’s En France a few years ago, and yet I have not heard of any the O’Neill’s En France coming forward with a y-dna test. We know that the majority of the tested O’Neill’s are of the SNP P312/S116R1b1b2a1ban estimated to be a 5,300 years old, and it’s mainly found in Western Europe with one of its members that has genealogical documents going back to the O’Neill’s of the Fews . You will find O’Neill’s of the SNP L21/S145/M529R1b1a2a1a1b4an estimated 4,000 years old, and is highly found in Ireland, Britain, Northwest France, and South-West Norway. It’s associated with the Brythonic, Gaelic, and Gaulish Celtic. Also O’Neill’s of the SNP M222 R1b1a2a1a1b4bthat is an estimated 3,000 years old and found high concentration in the North-West of Ireland and Western Scotland is associated with the Gaelic Culture. A few O’Neill’s of the SNP S28/U152 R1b1a2a1a1b3 that is an estimated 3,500 years old and found in high concentrations in theRhine, Meuse & Rhône basins, Alps, North Italy it’s associated with the Alpine Celts. Then O’Neill’s of the SNP L2/S139 R1b1a2a1a1b3c a SNP estimated to be a 2,500 years old, andmainly found in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Britain, Ireland, Norway and its associated with the Alpine Celts. An interesting Neely / O’Neill’s of the SNP M405/S21/U106 R1b1a2a1a1a, an estimated 3,500 years old, mainly found in Frisia, Belgium, England, Austria, northern Italy, and believed to be of a West Germanic origin. That claim to be descendants of the Royal O’Neill clan, and this is an interesting find since this SNP is found in Belgium a region inhabited by the Belgae a Germanic / Celt peoples before the Roman invasions, and were conquered by Rome circa 57 B.C.The SNP Z196 R1b1a2a1a1b2, an estimated 4,800 years old that is mainly found in Iberia, Southwestern France, and it’s associated with the Celtiberians, Iberians, Basques, and Gascons. Is a SNP that I would like to see among those O’Neill’s tested, since it will be somewhat in line with the Milesian myths? Yet I have not seen any only test positive for it so far. Let’s take a look at the possible descendants of these O’Neill’s currently tested.

The possible descendants of the Érainn / Belgae tribes of Belgium:

1. O’Neill’s of the SNP M405/S21/U106 R1b1a2a1a1a 3,500 ybp.
2. O’Neill’s of the SNP L2/S139 R1b1a2a1a1b3c 2,500 ybp.

The Érainn according to T.F. O’Rahilly’s theory were of a Belgae origin and dominating power in Ireland until 325 B.C. they were composed of the Uluti, the Darini, the Iverni, and the Ebdani. My theory is that the Érainn dominated Ulster, and the Gaels most of Ireland. We do know that the Uluti founded the ancient capital of Ulster named EmainMacha. The Goidels are believed to have arrived into Ireland form Southern Gaul, and the Érainn from Britain from the ultimate home land in what is now modern day Belgium or the Belenux regions. The O’Neill’s currently tested for the SNP L2/S139 R1b1a2a1a1b3c, and the SNP M405/S21/U106 R1b1a2a1a1a fit this theory very well. Then you have the other O’Neill’s tested do fit the Goidels invasion, but that would not make them the original members of the Érainn tribes.

The Descendants of the Goidelic / Gaul Celts invasion:

1. O’Neill’s of the SNP L21/S145/M529 R1b1a2a1a1b4 4,000 ybp.
2. O’Neill’s of the SNP S28/U152 R1b1a2a1a1b3 3,500 ybp.
3. O’Neill’s of the SNP M222 R1b1a2a1a1b4b 3,000 ybp.

O’Neill’s of the SNP P312/S116 R1b1b2a1b 5,300 ybp. Native population absorbed into the O’Neill clan.

According to T.F. O’Rahilly’s invasion modal:

1. The Cruithne or Preteni invading Ireland circa 700 – 500 B.C.
2. The Belgae or Érainn circa 500 B.C.
3. The Laigin, the Domnainn, and the Gaolin circa 300 B.C.
4. The Goidels or Gael circa 100 B.C.

The fact is that no trust can be placed in the pedigree of pre-Christian times. The pedigree makers and the authors of Lebor Gabala worked hand in hand. Their object was the same, namely, to provide a fictitious antiquity for the Goidels and a fictitious Goidelic descent for the Irish generally.- Early Irish History and Mythology - T.F. O'Rahilly

Finding the tribal origin of the current O’Neill’s is a very interesting task, and I don’t believe it has been tried yet. First I will start with Ptolemy’s map of Ireland in 100 A.D., assuming it’s not a based on other accounts from 200 years earlier. One of these tribes was the Brigantes who were a Celtic tribe that controlled the largest section of what would become Northern England, and a significant part of the Midlands. Their kingdom is sometimes called Brigantia, and it was centered in what is modern day Yorkshire. Ptolemy shows the Brigantes in Ireland, in the modern day regions of Co. Wexford, Co. Kilkenny, and Co. Waterford. There are various ancient settlements named Brigantium throughout Europe such as Brigantia in Galicia, Spain; Bragança, Portugal; and Briançon and Bregenz in the Alps. Are these the tribe of the mythological Milesian and their King Breoghan? Then we get the Cauci tribe of early Ireland, documented by Ptolemy, were he places their location roughly in the region of modern County Dublin and County Wicklow. Are they Germanic Chauci of the Low Countries and north-western Germany? We do know that the Chauci were a Germanic sea faring people, and that may have been the way they invaded Ireland. They are close neighbors in Ireland to another possible Germanic tribe the Menapii, who were also a Belgic tribe of northern Gaul in pre-Roman and Roman times. Their territory according to Strabo and Ptolemy was located at the mouth of the Rhine and their territory corresponds roughly to the modern coast of Flanders, extended into neighboring France and possibly the Netherlands. This looks to be the ancient Irish tribe Manapii described to have occupied anciently the areas which are now modern day County Fermanagh, Ireland. This tribe was associated with the Belgae, a tribe that in Ancient sources are described to be of a Celtic or Germanic origin.
The tribes of the Belgae were these:

Ambiani,Atrebates,Atuatuci,Bellovaci,Caerosi,Caleti,Condrusi,Eburones,Menapii,Morini,Nervii,Paemani,Remi,Suessiones,Veliocassi, Viromandui.

One of the tribes in the North of Ireland were the Darini the ancient tribe described in Ptolemy's 2nd century mapshows them to have occupied in modern regions of South Antrim and North Down, Ireland. Some have suggested a strong relationship between the Darini and the Iverni. According to T.F. O’Rahilly’s theoryof his invasion model of Ireland, he believes that a branch of the Belgae also settled in Ireland, and were later represented by the historical Iverni or Érainn tribe, the Ulaid, and other tribes. His theory which is believed by many is that the name, of the legendary Fir Bolg’s, is the Irish equivalent of Belgae.
The Milesian myths, in my opinion, were created later on to provide the ruling clans of the day a legit origin in the eyes of the church, and by doing this they eliminated the Tuatha de Danann as mere ancient gods. The ancient Gael concept of the word Tuath which really meant 'people' and from this the root word emerged the word ' Deutsch'.

Teutonic "of or pertaining to the Germanic languages and to peoples or tribes who speak or spoke them," from L. Teutonicus, from Teutones, name of a tribe that inhabited coastal Germany.
• Teuta, word for "people" Lith. tauto, Osc. touto, O.Ir. Tuath, Goth. þiuda, O.E. þeod.Dutsch.duit-isc, þeodisc "belonging to the people," common language of Germanic people, from þeod "people, race, from teuta- "people" cf. O.Ir. tuoth "people," O.Lith. tauta "people," O.Prus. tauto "country," Oscan touto "community".

The big question is are the O’Neill’s who have tested positive for the SNP L2/S139 R1b1a2a1a1b3c a SNP estimated to be a 2,500 years old, and that is mainly found in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Britain, Ireland, Norway and its associated with the Alpine Celts part of this Belgae, Tuatha de Danann, and Chauci origin? Or are the O’Neill’s of the SNP M405/S21/U106 R1b1a2a1a1a? An estimated 3,500 years old, mainly found in Frisia, Belgium, England, Austria, northern Italy, and believed to be of a West Germanic origin. Some have estimated that the Tuatha de Danann replaced the Fir Bolg’s (Belgae) in 1900 B.C.? I put no dates on any sort of invasions etc. But I have a theory that just small bands of warriors arrived in the 3rd century B.C. possibly from Britain or continental Europe and introduced Iron weapons and gained an advantage over the native populations. Was there a Germanic tribal invasion into Ireland? It’s very possible with the names of tribes shown in Ptolemy’s Map, and the current O’Neill’s tested with SNP’s with association with high frequencies in areas once occupied by Germanic tribes the answer is yes, in my opinion. How big was the invasion? That is another question. When more y-dna test are taken from the overall population of O’Neill’s throughout the world not just the O’Neill’s in Ireland , Australia , and the United States, but from the lands were many of the O’Neill’s served as mercenaries and military men for their new respected nations at the time Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Austria, and France. Then there are the countless countries in the Caribbean and South America.

The Milesian: Gothia or Getulia?

The Milesian: Gothia or Getulia?
By M.A.O'Neill

The Milesian myths have the Scythian King Lamhfionn of Crete proceeded with a voyage and lands in Gothland or Getulia, were he had a son named Heber Glunfionn, who was uncommon in wisdom, courage, and knowledge. Some say Gothia, Gothland, Gothinia, or Getulia.

Heber Glunfionn born in Gothiaor Getulia were the Gadelians remained for thirty years and in other accounts for a hundred and fifty years. There are said to be Kings of Getulia or Gothia? Let’s look at Getulia on historical accounts and not by mythological ones.

Getulia was situated in North Africa in a desert region south of the Atlas Mountains, bordering the Sahara, and other accounts say it was in the areas of modern day Tunisia and Algeria. This region was occupied by the Gaetuli an ancient Berber tribe of Northern Africa. If one wants to believe the Milesian myths then we are to believe that the Milesian lived for over 150 years among the nomadic Berber tribes of Getulia, a region that the Roman Empire had trouble with for years. There are no accounts of Celts settling any areas of North Africa, but the Vandals and they was an East Germanic tribe from Jutland. In 429 AD under King Genseric entered Northern Africa and by 435 AD they controlled most of the Roman North African provinces these being what are modern day Algeria and Northern Morocco.

• Agnan Fionn King of Gothia or Getulia
• Febric Glas King of Gothia or Getulia
• Nenuall King of Gothia or Getulia
• Nuadhat King of Gothia or Getulia
• Alladh (Alldoit) King of Gothia or Getulia
• Archadh (Arcid) King of Gothia or Getulia
• Deaghatha of Scythia
• Bratha King of Galicia born in Gothia or Getulia, and the descendant of Heber Fionn, commanded the voyage of Gadelians from Gothland to Spain.
• Breoghan King of Galicia
• Bile King of Galicia
• Milesius (Galamh) his son Colpa of the Sword born in Gothia or Getulia.

The warlike sons of the Gadelian race remain’d among the Goths for thirty years, and there shall some of their prosperity. Remain till the world’s end. – Giolla Coamhan.

Gothland, “Land of the Geats” is located in the geographical area in the south of Sweden, bounded by the north by Svealand. Which was inhabited by the people called the Gautars or Geatas. The Geatas were a North Germanic tribe. The Goths leaving Scandinavia some associate with the Weilbark culture a culture that appeared during the first half of the 1st century BC, and replaced the Okyswie culture, that was in what in now modern day East Pomeriania around the lower Vistula River, yet this is just a theory. In the 2nd Century the Goths occupied the areas of Scythia under the legendary Gothic King Filimer, and then in a second migration they went into Moesia, Dacia, and Thrace. But returned and settled in the northern parts of the Black Sea, and under another legendary Gothic King Tanausius the Royal Goth bloodline repelled the advance of Pharaoh Sesostris of the 12th dynasty, yet this could be all myths. There are the historical accounts of the Goths raiding Crete in 269 A.D. and this was during the massive invasions of Scythian tribes into Roman territory during 267 – 269 A.D. The first “Scythians” were the Heruli that raided and ravaged with 500 ships the southern Black Sea coasts. They were defeated by the Romans, and escaped into the Aegean Sea, where they just ravaged surrounding lands, and including the islands of Crete and Rhodes. This coalition of “Scythians” was in reality the Goths, the Gepids, the Peucini, and the Heruli. All were Germanic tribes outside the Peucini that were a mixture of Germanic and Celtic cultures.

The Legendary kings of Gothland are well known and recorded and they are as follows.

1. King Dag associated with the Yngvi-Frey.
2. King Gizur.
3. King Gauti.
4. King Ring of Eastern Gotaland, son of King Gauti.
5. King Herrauor, son of King Ring.
6. King Gautrekr.
7. King KetillGautreksson.

For the Milesian to have been Goths then maybe there would be some mention in the myths of the Royal blood lines associated with the Amalings and the Balthings, or even the names would have some Gothic origin. It looks like the creators of the Milesian myths later on used the some of the Gothic history to give their origins a Royal Blood line compared to other blood lines through Europe. Unless some of the descendants of the Royal Houses obtain Y-DNA tests, or ancient remains of Irish Kings are tested for their Y-DNA.

I don’t find Gothic origin names among the Milesian mythological genealogies outsidethe only examples:

1. Febric Glas, Ric = Ruler.
2. Deaghatha, Deag = Day, Athala = Nobel, Atha = Terrible, Nantha = Brave, or Mahta, meaning “Mighty.”3. Bratha, Atha = Terrible., Athala = Nobel, Nantha = Brave, or Mahta, meaning “Mighty.”
The Gael word Fionn is from the Gael Fionn, meaning “Fair” or “White.” The Gaul word Vindo, meaning, “White” or “Shinning”.

There is the word Finne that could have origins in the Old High German Fendo, or the Middle High German word Vende, meaning “Wanderer.”

The Gothic word Finthan, Old High German word Finthan meaning “To find.”

The Old Norse word Finnr, was used to describe the Suomi.

The first Celts are said to have arrived in Ireland circa 2000 – 300 BC. The myths have the Milesian being Kings also of Galicia, and the Celts did occupy Galicia prior to the arrival of the Suevi in 395 AD. The first Celtic settlement in Galicia was that of the Saefs, or Sefes in 11th century BC. The Saefs were Celtic peoples of the Hallstatt Culture that was predominant in Central Europe from 8th to the 6th century BC, basically European Iron Age that developed from the Urnfield culture. The Hallstatt culture is often associated mainly with the Celtic populations. The Saefs are believed to have been from the areas of the Czech-German areas they are said to have migrated in the 6th century BC over the Pyrenees into Spain. Then there is the Gallaeci a Celtic people that are the descendants of an Atlantic Stone age peoples 1300-700 BC composed of tribes with the names of Arrtrebi, Albioni, Celtici, Supertamarici, and Lemavi. The Asturian region was occupied by the Astures Celtic tribecomposed of tribes by the names of Luggones, Albiones, and the Pesicos. The Astures may have been part of an early immigration of the Hallstatt expansion that emigrated from the Bavaria – Bohemian region. The Astures are recorded to have fought as Spanish Mercenaries under Hasdrubal Barca’s army in 207 BC, during the 2nd Punic war. The Romans entered Galicia in 137 – 138 BC. Under General DecimusJunius Brutus and the area was now known under the name Gallaecia. In 137 BC the Gallaeci faced the Romans with an army of 60,000 at the battle of the river Douro and were defeated. In 61 BC the Romans under the command of Julius Caesar landed in Brigantium, modern day la Coruna. In 395 the Suevi took over Galicia, and in 411 they created the first medieval kingdom of Europe. Also, the Vandals, Suevi, and Alans occupied Spain, and in 416 – 418 AD. Then the Visigoths invaded Spain, were the King Attaces of the Alans was killed in battle.
Galicia and Asturias came under Suebic and then Visigoth controlwhen 585 AD, the Visigoths took control of Galicia, and its first king was King Leovigild. Before that it was occupied by the Romans. If the Milesian were Celts from Galicia then they would have migrated into Ireland circa 200 BC – 61 BC escaping the onslaught of the Roman Empire. We do now that Ptolemy’s map circa 150 AD of Ireland has a Brigantes tribe in the south of Ireland in modern day Wexford, Kilkenny and Waterford, and these Brigantes are the same that occupied Northern and significant parts of the Midlands of England, and once the areas of what is now modern day York, England. Are these the same Brigantes of Northern, Spain? Who knows there could be a strong possibility, but are the Milesian of this tribe? If they were then the Milesian myths would mention their conquest of Northern England and occupation. Also, it doesn’t fit the myths modal of the conquest of Northern Ireland by the sons of Milesius, nor there was any Brigantes in Northern Africa for over 150 years, nor in Gothland etc. The Milesian myths are just myths and the more you look into their accounts the more you start to see that it was an elaborate creation.

There is the Galatians led by Brennus and they were Celts that migrated and invaded Macedon, and others Galatians were original Celts who settled Galatia came via Thrace under the leadership of Leotanius and Leonnorios around 270 BC. The fall of the 2nd Scythian kingdom was due to an onslaught of Celts, Thracians, and Sarmatians circa the 3rd century BC. That is one is to assume that the Milesian were of Galatian Celtic origins, and then we have get into Y-DNA samples to prove this.
