Amlaib Conung is a interesting Viking lord that is described by the Fragmentary Annals of Ireland to have been the son of Gofraid believed to have been the king of Norway or possibly the Hebrides and sorrounding areas . Amlaib Conung was the older brother Ivar both are said to have aided King MaelSechlainn and in another account Aedh Finnlaith in raids against Meath in 862 and other territories in Ireland. What is not told by many is that Amlaib conung was married to the daughter of Aedh Finnlaith as described in the Fragmentary Annals of Ireland.
In 849 A.D. in the sixth year of the reign of Mael Sechlainn is when Amlaib Conung is mentioned when he appears with a proclamation of tributes and taxex from his father. The annals of the four masters have that in 861 A.D. Amlaib Conung , Ivar and Auisle and Lorcan, son of Cathal , Lord of Meath plunder the land of Flann , son of Conang. In the year 862 Amlaib Conung is written to have been the son in law of Aedh Finnlaith. It's written that both combined a great army of Irish and Norse and they killed many freemen in the plain of Mide. In 869 the Annals in Ireland describe Amlaib Conung plundering from West to East , and from North to South all over Ireland.
What is a interesting account is that the sons of Amlaib Conung are not known , but what is known is that he was the son in law of Aedh Finnlaith. Only male decendants were his brothers especially Ivar who was the founder of the House of Ivar, for many years ruled in Yorkshire and Dublin. His younger brother Auisle was said to have been killed by Amlaib Conung over jealousy due to Amlaib Conung's wife the daughter of Cinaed, which Cinaed is this is up to debate by scholars the two main Cinaed's are Cinaed MacAlpin , the King of the Picts and the other is Cinaed MacConaing, King of Brega.
These three Viking lords are said to be of a Swedish origin associated with the Ynglings who established themselves in Denmark for a period of time. Auisle the youngest brother of Ivar and Amlaib Conung did leave a son who was killed in 833 by Muirgel , the daughter of Mael Sechlainn MacMaele Ruanaid and Ottar, the son of Jarnkne. No known reason why this occured is given.
What ever happened to the sons of Amlaib Conung and the daughter of Aedh Finnlaith? I estimate possibly born circa 860's. Did these sons remain among the Ui Neill of the North? or did they remain among their Viking kindred? Finding a distinct haplotype of various families in the areas and territories were these Viking lords will be a lead to finding the possible origins and descendants of these men. The current belief is that the male line no longer exist.

Yorkshire DYS YCA II b 21
Yorkshire DYS YCA II b 21
Recently among a certain group of families with origins in Yorshire , England . There all have the value of 21 at Marker DYS YCA II b with most with the value of 16 at DYS 456. Very different from the usual value of 13 at DYS 456 of the O'Neill's of Puerto Rico. It's difficult to find what group of peoples does the value of 21 at YCA II b might define. But since it's is found among a group of various families in Yorshire this could give some insight of it's origins.
The Celts, Saxons , Danes or Norse?
Region of Yorshire was once occupied by the Brigantes a Celt tribal name found in Northern Spain, Austria, York and South East Ireland. Modern day Austria was once the home land of the tribe called the Brigantii on the lake of Constance once called the Brigantinus Lacus. Their capital was Brigantium Raetiae modern day Bregenz. In Northern Spain we have Brigantia and Brigantium Hispaniae in La Coruna , Spain. In South east Ireland there is the ancient region of Bregia and described by Ptolemy in his map as a region occupied by the Brigantes. Then we have the Brigantes of North Riding Yorkshire and West Riding Yorkshire. The Brigantes in England controlled more territory than any other Celtic tribe. Ancient Yorkshire was known as Isurium Brigantium.

Currently no y-dna evidence has been found to support that the Marker DYS YCA II b 21 defines the Brigantes. No y-dna L48 + group of people have been found in Northern Spain with the value of 21 @ YCA II b . There has been two different tested people one form Switzerland but it's not known if his origins are from the area near the Lake Constance and another has been tested and his origins are from Bukovina a are that was once part of Galicia of Eastern Europe . Still there is no evidence to support that this marker DYS YCA II b 21 defines any Brigantes Celts since all these areas were once occupied by the Goths and other Germanic tribes.
It's very likely this marker may define the Danes or Norse of Yorkshire who in 866 invaded and captured Yorkshire led by Ivar the Boneless . There could be many possible origins for this group in Yorkshire the Ynglings etc. It's very likely this DYS YCA II b with value of 21 may end up showing the origins of the Danes or Norse of Yorshire.

L48/S162 O'Neill's of Puerto Rico
Origins of the SNP L48 is not clear known. What is know is that is associated with a Germanic origin. The age of L48 is speculated to be around 2,900 - 3,100 years old. This bloodline of the O'Neill's of Puerto Rico is defined by unique values at certain markers .
DYS 390 = 23 , DYS 439 = 11 , DYS 389-2 = 29, DYS 447 = 24 , DYS 449 = 28 , DYS YCA II b = 21, DYS 456 = 13, DYS 459 = 19, DYS 537 = 11 , DYS 534 = 17
L48 is associated with a Germanic origin but it's not known if it represents a East Germanic tribal origin, These were the tribes who immigrated from Scandinavia into the area between the Oder and Vistula rivers between 600 - 300 b.c. later futher south . Among these tribes where said to be the Goths a hetrogenous East Germanic Tribe who later reached what was known as Scythian on the coast of the Black Sea and in later centuries conquered Northern Spain.
If one believes the Irish myths and legends of the a aristrocratic Scythian tribe named the Milesians whose origins are said to be in Scythia , the island of Gothinia (Gotland), and Northern Galicia . One would believe this to be evidence. But facts are not based on myths and legends like some out there who still believe these Irish legends has fact when it seems that the Irish scribes used the Historia de Regibus Gothorum , Vandalorum et Suevorum has a blue print for their Milesian genealogies and legends.
There are two theories one is a NPE (Non Paternal Event) involving the Dubh Lochlannaigh, the black Scandinavians or the Finn Lochlannaigh, the fair strangers. For the O'Neill's of Puerto Rico L48 / S162 SNP. This event would have occured around 850 - 1000 a.d. this is where the y-dna most recent common ancestor (MRCA) and matches stop. The nearest matches are 4 people one from the Shetland islands , another from northern Finland , and Norway and the last in Ulster. What is different among the O'Neill's of Puerto Rico and other O'Neill's is their past history of sea piracy and military exploits and their fondness for settlement on islands.
One account that is intersting is that in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles that describe
914 Neil king was slain by Sihtric his brother
921. Here sihtric king slew Neil his brother.
Only Neil King Sigtrygg Caech, also known as Sihtric killed was Niall Glundubh MacAedo at the battle of Kilmashoge near Dublin in 917 or 919.
A interesting figure in all this is Amlaib Conung, King of the Lochlainn, said in the Fragmentary Annals to have been a son in law of Aed Finnlaith MacNeill, the father of Niall Glundubh MacAedo. Others belive that Amlaib Conung wife was the daughter of Cinaed MacAlpin, also known as Kenneth MacAlpin. Niall Glundubh MacAedo's mother was written to be Mael Muire the daughter of Kenneth MacAlpin.
During the period after the death of Niall Glundubh MacAedo is when the Irish under Muirchertach ' of the leather cloaks ' MacNeill son of Niall Glundubh MacAedo they begin to build naval fleets like the Danes and start to attack into the Hebrides. Aed Finnlaith " The fair warrior" is one of the first Irish chiefs to seek alliances with the Norse during his military exploits.
Currently a group of MacLochlainn's in Ireland have been tested and are L48/ S162 SNP positive they are current members of the MacLaughlinn Surname dna project. This is very interesting and can futher shed light into the SNP L48 in Ireland.

The last of our kind?
There is one bloodline of the O'Neill's of Puerto Rico that is of the SNP L48 / R1b1b2a1a4. These are the descendants of Don Juan O'Neill who arrived in Puerto Rico in the early 1700's. The Haplotype is well established with unique values at markers DYS YCA II b and DYS 456 .
Currently there are none of the O'Neill's tested within the SNP L48/ R1b1b2a1a4 out of less than 200 tested in the O'Neill DNA project. But there are MacLochlainn's in their respected dna project who are of the SNP L48 / R1b1b2a1a4 this is a very interesting find since the MacLochlainns of Ulster are the closest kindred to the O'Neill's but it's not known of the origins of these MacLochlainn's at the moment . It's will very unlikely that the O'Neill's of Puerto Rico will not find any y-dna matches among the O'Neill's in Ireland, Australia , and the United States. The odds are very slim but among the O'Neill's in Spain, Portugal , the Caribbean and the Netherlands the odds of having a match improves. The mayority of the O'Neill's currently tested fall into 4 groups of SNP's the I2b1a, R1b1b1b2a1b5b who are less common unlike the SNP / Haplogroup R1b1b2a1b and R1b1b2 but it must be noted many of these tested have not had their SNP tested.
Very unlikely they will be many O'Neill's in Australia , United States and Ireland of the SNP L48 and of the O'Neill's of Puerto Rico unique haplotype if there is a match this will be a one in a million match since not even other surnames match this bloodline in any database.
So it's looks like this bloodline is the last of it's kind among the O'Neill's and other surnames.

Ancient O'Neill Remains Y-DNA testing.
Testing O'Neill Y-dna remains
It is well known that y-dna testing on ancient remains is done by various companies for sometime now. Recently the remains of King Tut and his family were obtained, the Y-dna of Christopher Colombus has been in the process for sometime now and countless other famous remains and not so famous. But i have seen certain people accuse that testing the ancient remains of the O'Neill's is outlandish and could not be done. This is untruthfull and ignorant when it is well known this can be done. I believe if the y-dna of King Tut can be obtained so can the y-dna of many of the O'Neill's form the 1000 to 1600's.
One may ask why this hasn't been done?
You have Trinity College in Ireland, the recently formed Association of O'Neill Clans who also administer the O'Neill Y-DNA project can tackle this issue. But no one outside myself has proposed this. What can be found in those remains can shed a big light on the O'Neill clan history and put alot of theories to rest and start new ones.
What is the fear?
I see that the biggest fear is the truth that maybe the O'Neill's of Tyrone are not what was expected them to be or many believed them to be. I believe is time that the O'Neill remains be tested either by the a Independent group and all the O'Neill's will find the truth. For those who truely desire to know the truth.

Constantino O'Neill? And Don Juan O'Neill.
Who was Don Constatino O'Neill mentioned in the O'Neill's de Puerto Rico oral history? Who ever Constantino O'Neill was he must have been born around the 1620 or 1640's and must have been in Spain or just changed his name in his new homeland of Spain . If he would have been from Ireland his name would have been called Conn. There seem to be many Conn O'Neill's but not many lived in the Spanish Netherlands nor in Spain , this eliminates all other Conn O'Neill's.
There was Constantino O'Neill who had a son named Felix O'Neill later became a Colonel in the Spanish Netherlands who served under Owen Roe O'Neill.
Conn O'Neill the 3rd son of Art O'Neill , father of two sons Daniel and Brian O'Neill , who was the father of Conn O'Neill who died in Spain.
Conn O'Neill , the 3rd son of Owen Roe O'Neill , father of Colonel Owen O'Neill and Lewis O'Neill both served in France.
There seem to be the connection of Don Bernardo O'Neill and Constantino O'Neill both associted with Owen Roe O'Neill.
Conn O'Neill, who died in 1601 , son of Hugh O'Neill , 2nd Earl of Tyrone, his grandson Feardorcha O'Neill left Ireland with don Hugh O'Neill into continental Europe . (Possibly Brussels)
Conn na Creige , son of Hugh O'Neill, 2nd Earl of Tyrone, who died in the tower of London in 1622 . Whose descendants nothing is known.
Conn McNeill McFachartaigh O'Neill, who was married to Owen Roe O'Neill's sister from whom he had a nephew named Brian O'Neill born circa 1612 , he served many years under the Prince of Orange army. He was married to a Catherine , the eldest daughter of Thomas, 2nd Baron of Wotton. He has a son named Harry O'Neill from a previous marriage but notthing is known of him or his descendats.
In 1697 there was Captain Constantino O'Neill , who served in the regiment of Clancarthy.
The progenitor of one of the O'Neill of Puerto Rico family is Don Juan O'Neill. Who is this Don Juan O'Neill ? and what was his connection with this Don Constatino O'Neill and the Spanish Netherlands?
Who were these men named Rocco , Guillermo and Edmundo O'Neill?
There is clue who these men could have been and a connection Don Arturo O'Neill de Tyrone O'Keffe, 2nd Marques del Norte , had his son Don Gonzalo O'Neill y Chabert born in Rio Piedras March 31, 1830 baptized by cadet Don Carlos Eugenio O'Neill from the regiments in Grenada. Very unlikely Don Arturo O'Neill de Tyrone O'Keffe would have his son baptized by a cadet unless he was from a distinct bloodline.
The island of Grenada was occupied by the French, and history well states that Dillon's regiment were contributors in the conquest of the islands of Grenada, St. Eustacia, Tobago and St.Christopher.
